Helping Hand

The anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) will be later this coming week.

Unless you have a family member or know someone with cognitive, mobility, or visual needs, you probably don’t notice the helping hand that guard and safety railings provide.

Their visual presence is obvious in every day, public space infrastructure. But the use of railings for balance and support, as fixed boundaries, and as fall protection, prevent accidents. And they help promote independent living and navigation.

Even if you don’t think you need them, the continuous, passive protection railings offer provide stability, and something to hold on to, when the weather creates frozen, slick, and wet surfaces.
